I use Workflowy to create Hookmark links to Dropbox files. This works seamlessly between my Desktop Mac and Macbook. However, this does not work with iCloud Drive and I’m trying to find a solution.
Workflowy and Dropbox sync between my two Macs (Dropbox files are stored locally on both devices). Using Workflowy with Hookmark links is quite elegant because files can be instantly opened, modified, and then saved in Dropbox. This avoids downloading files for modification (and then re-uploading) – which is the default requirement for files stored in Workflowy, Apple Notes, Bear, and Notion (the note-taking systems I’ve tried so far). Moreover, files are stored in the Finder, which is better for longevity and has the benefit of allowing for Time Machine backups. Evernote (which I’ve also used) avoids the issue of having to download and re-upload files in order to modify them, but I struggle with organizing and finding notes and files in Evernote, and ultimately using Evernote doesn’t allow Finder storage of resources and Time Machine backups.
Workflowy, on the other hand, is brilliantly simple for taking, organizing, and finding notes (especially when using its Mirror function), and when combined with Hookmark links to Finder files, is just amazing!
I plan to switch to iCloud Drive to store my files because iCloud Drive offers end-to-end encryption with Advanced Data Protection turned on. I don’t want to wake up one morning to news that Dropbox was hacked … to my understanding, Dropbox files on individual accounts are encrypted in transit as well as their cloud server, but Dropbox has the decryption keys (Apple does not) and can, in theory, open files. I’m not worried about a search warrant, but I am worried about a hack of their decryption keys (or a rouge employee). Hacked “securely stored” files seems to happen to other companies on a regular basis, and some version of hacking has occurred twice with Dropbox.
I ran some tests on syncing Workflowy with Hookmark links to files in iCloud Drive (with ADP turned on). Unfortunately, although the links work on the primary Mac (where the links were created), they don’t work after syncing the Hookmark links and files to my second Mac (again, this works with Dropbox). Is there a work-around? A way to use Workflowy with links to files stored in iCloud Drive that sync to other Macs without breaking?
