I have been using Hookmark sporadically over the last few months, and in general I find it has potential to be very useful! However, one of my problems is that I often forget that relevant items might already be hooked to something I am working on, and I don’t take advantage of the time savings or functionality of Hookmark because of that. I recently found out that I can activate a notification in the menu bar icon to indicate the number of hooks available to an item, which could potentially help me with that. The only problem is that this is a tiny indicator and I rarely (if ever) look at my menu bar. It is especially problematic when I work with my ultrawide monitor, because the menu icon is not in my field of vision, making it impossible to see unless I explicitly check it, which is exactly the problem I am trying to avoid.
Is it possible to make an indicator that there exist hooked items much more prominent? I’m not sure what form that can take. Some options:
- A floating transparent badge that appears next to the selected item. In this way it appears in context and I can see it, but by making it transparent it will not be too obtrusive. Potentially allowing setttings for transparency and control over when it appears would be good (e.g., disappear after some seconds. Only show if X minutes/hours have passed since the last time it was shown)
- A corner pop-up of the hookmark window. Specifically, look into how this works for Apple notes - when a link to a website or app link is added to an apple note, whenever you open that website or app state, in the right corner on mac and iOS a small corner of the note will appear. If you click on it the note will show in full; if you ignore it it disappears after some seconds. It captures attention due to movement, but remains visually unobtrusive
This is important to me because I have ADHD and one of the symptoms is impairment in object permanence - “out of sight, out of mind”. Having a strong visual indicator that hooks exist would be a huge help with remembering to use or follow them
