For example, I have a Pages file in the Pages iCloud container. When I tap the link on iOS or iPadOS it opens the Hookmark app only; the linked file is never opened and the Files app is never opened.
Sorry about this issue, @JohnB .
Is it a file link starting with “hook://..”? Due to iOS sandboxing, hook://file/ links are not working on iOS devices and are also not yet synced.
Thank you
It sure is, and sorry I wasn’t aware of the hook:// link issue. Is there a resource you can point me to that explains which links do sync to mobile so I can begin transitioning to that linking type?
Here it is:
Hi, @bchend. What I meant was a resource or reference that talks about the limitations on being able to sync hook://file/ links. The resource you linked says: “Bookmark anything that has a URL” which is not consistent with the limitation you called out.
Sorry about the misunderstanding, @JohnB .
Thank you for pointing that out. We will update the page .
Hi.
Don’t see an update yet - it looks like help for Hookmark Pal for iOS is about two pages? I used to develop in Hypercard and Lotus Notes - both of which had wonderful linking abilities, and both of which became casualties of neglect by their parent companies. I’m not an adept at Hookmark on Mac, I don’t pick things up as fast as I used to. Would appreciate some simple explanation of how HP works other than being a handy URL manager for iOS.
Here’s what I would like to do:
Use OmniOutliner as my main “shell” and put links in a large outline (on Mac and/or iOS) so that I can link to:
Apple Photos
Apple Contacts
Apple Mail
Apple Notes
Apple Pages
BusyContacts
BusyCal
and some other apps would be great…
I’m not even sure that Hookmark can manage those links on a Mac - the capability seems to change when I go back to links or capabilities that I thought worked, later they don’t. But there are corresponding apps on Mac and iOS, so I had hoped that Hookmark/Pal would be “the glue” to let me move back and forth between those platforms with my OmniOutliner project.
Internet browser (web page) URLs are inherent everywhere, so that doesn’t do much for me. AFAICT, the main app that works is Apple Notes and Mail? Is everything else sandboxed or otherwise blocked by Apple or vendors that don’t offer link capabilities? Do we need to have a bunch of ShortCuts written for these apps as with Apple Notes? This is frustrating any help and some insights would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Sorry about that web page issue, @JohnB . We will have a look.
Apple Pages won’t work due to iOS sandboxing.
We will look into Apple Photos and Apple Contacts issues.
BusyContacts does not have iOS app
BusyCal URLs should work. If a bookmark has the same URL across macOS and iOS, then the URLs synced from macOS can be opened on iOS devices.
Thank you
Sorry, I didn’t include this Hookmark Pal help web page:
Hookmark on Mac can create many types of custom hook:// links such as:
-
hook://addressbook
: For Apple’s Contacts app. -
hook://email/
: for linking to emails in an email-client agnostic way (based on RFC email ID). -
hook://file/
: for linking to files in Finder. -
hook://notes/
-
and more.
These schemes are listed here.
Currently, of these custom schemes, Hookmark Pal can only open hook://email
and hook://notes
links. You can open as many URL schemes as are handled by apps on your iPhone or iPad. See Hookmark Pal Help.
