Will it be available on SetApp?

No it won’t be on setapp’s ios app

I subscribed to Hookmark Pal on my iPhone but I don’t understand how to use it. When I select a URL, i see choices of Open Link, Copy Link or Share… When I open Hookmark Pal and select All, I see an icon on the top right. When I select it I see the URL with choices of Dismiss or Focus.

I don’t understand where Hookmark Pal presents itself when I select a URL. How does bidirectional links works? I suggest showing usage screenshots or a tutorial.

Thank you,

Abe

When you tap on the clipboard icon in the top right corner, Hookmark Pal will check to see if there is a link in the clipboard and if so it will focus on that link. This means that it will show you whatever is hooked to that URL.

To create bidirectional links:

  1. make sure there is a link in the clipboard (you can do this from within Hookmark by long-pressing on a link and choosing the Copy option; or from outside Hookmark as you normally would, such as from Safari using the Share sheet to copy the link).
  2. long press on the link you want hooked to #1, and select Hook to Copied Link

A hook is a bidirectional link between two addresses (URLs.) Hooks are a handy way to navigate between information.

Normally, most of a user’s hooks will be created on Mac. You’d long press on a link that has hooks to _focus_ on that link, which will show you whatever is hooked to the link.

If I choose iCloud for syncing are all my bookmarks stored in iCloud instead of my Mac?

Not instead of but in addition to.

So, my bookmarks will stay where they are now and also on iCloud?

that is correct. You can disconnect from iCloud anytime.

Great news. Glad you set it up like that!

Is it possible to make a one-time purchase? Is subscription the only option?

I’m a little surprised at the subscription pricing. I’m very glad for the Hookmark app on my mobile device but because it’s pretty clumsy to use (through a combination of app design and Apple’s restrictions) I really only use the app as a means to recognize tapped hook urls and immediately move to another app. I have no problem paying for apps, and am a proud supporter of Hookmark Pro, but for what I see as a companion app that I try to spend almost no time in, the subscription seems high.

I have not used the iOS version yet, but there seems to be dyssynchrony between the pricing model for iOS and Macbook apps. In my experience, either both apps (Mac and iOS) are subscription-based or both are a one-time fee (with either (a) one year free upgrades included - such as with Hookmark Mac or DEVONthink; or (b) fee for major revision - such as with OmniFocus and Alfred).

Thanks all for feedback about the pricing model. We have a lot to say about that, but regarding the apparent dyssynchrony it may help to note that Hookmark is also available as a subscription via Setapp.

We realize that many users would like Hookmark Pal to be free.

  1. Whereas we received countless requests for us to develop Hookmark Pal, which has had and will have real software development and management costs to us here @ CogSci Apps, we also acknowledge that many of our Mac users are not interested in the iPhone or iPal version. If we were to make it available for free, it would effectively mean that all Mac users, including Mac-only users, would be subsidizing Hookmark Pal, which does not seem fair to us (nor to them).
  2. The development of Hookmark Pal over the years has taken some of our resources away from the development of the Mac version, and will continue to do so.
  3. Charging separately for Hookmark Pal ensures that our financial interests align with our Pal customers’ interests, meaning we will continue to have a financial incentive to develop Hookmark Pal.
  4. In fact, we see ways in which Pal can develop differently from Hookmark for Mac given the differences in the platforms. For instance, we intend to enable Hookmark Pal to add new bookmarks to many bookmarking apps, like DEVONthink and Goodlinks, making it, and to sync tags with configured bookmarking apps. (That solves a major silo/fragmentation problem for customers who use multiple apps that provide background and tagging functionality.)
  5. This pricing model allows us to be open to feature requests specifically for Pal, and to fund customer support, without penalizing Mac-only customers.

About DEVONthink. DEVONthink for Mac has recently changed their pricing model to be the same as Hookmark’s (pay for the app, with optional annual Updates licenses) and I believe they do charge for DEVONthink To Go.

In our next newsletter (to which you can subscribe here, we will have a link to a new survey through which subscribers may give us feedback on all aspects of Hookmark Pal.

Thanks again, everyone, for your feedback and continued interest in Hookmark and the values of interoperability that motivate its develpment. (Cf. the Manifesto for Ubiquitous Linking).

Thanks for the notes and I appreciate the hard work that goes into developing quality software and listening to your customers.

I certainly have no issues paying for software (including separate iOS apps such as Hookmark Pal) that supports my workflow and am more than happy to pay to “own” software - whether it applies to a specific release (e.g. all releases within 4.x or a release which includes a year of upgrades). I have paid for three major releases of both DEVONthink (2.x, 3.x, 4.x) and the same goes for OmniFocus (2.x, 3.x, 4.x) but I have free will / option to decide whether I want to upgrade based on the features that are released in the newest versions.

The problem with the subscription model (as a whole) is that it provides no guarantee that the software will improve while at the same time forcing the user to pay for the same features that existed in the previous year in order to continue to use the software. The other models mentioned provides incentives for the software company / developer to build features that the end user actually wants and is willing to pay an additional fee to gain access to them.

We have fielded many requests from customers who want to know whether Hookmark Pal is or will be available on Setapp’s iPhone & iPad app store. Our reply is this:

We have no intention of putting Hookmark Pal on Setapp’s iPhone and iPad service. Hookmark Pal on App Store is already sold as a subscription via in-app purchase. We put a lot of effort into Hookmark Pal, and intend to continue, but we do not feel Setapp iPhone & iPad service revenue would be enough to sustain this work. Furthermore, we do not want App Store users to be subsidizing Setapp for iPhone/iPad users (that would not be fair to them). That’s just like I said above, that we don’t want Hookmark for Mac-only users to subsidize Hookmark Pal, which is why we are charging for Pal on the App Store.

Also, we are already managing quite a lot distribution-wise for a small company: (a) Hookmark for Mac is available via Paddle; (b)Hookmark for Mac is available via Setapp subscription service; (c) we might put Hookmark for Mac on the Setapp marketplace too once it supports Canadian sales (I don’t know if or when that would be); (d) Hookmark Pal is on App Store; (e) mySleepButton is on App Store; (f) mySleepButton is also available on Google Play. That’s already a lot of overhead.

DEVONthink has a one time fee available for the mobile app as well.
