Hookmark not starting

Just upgraded to macOS Sequoia 15.5 (24F74) yesterday and Hookmark now doesn’t start. This seems to be happening every time I’m updating macOS, which is really annoying as I’m losing time backing up my preferences, reinstalling every time.

Activity Monitor shows the Finder extension still running but opening Hookmark.app does nothing. No window, no menu, no error message—nothing.

Please advise as I’m losing patience!

Thank you for contacting us, and sorry about the issue, @alexcr87.

Could you please open /Applications/Utilities/Console and check if there are any crash reports for Hookmark?
If you find one, please send it to us at support@cogsciapps.com.

If no crash report is found, please try launching Hookmark again and let us know the time you did so.. Also, kindly include your Mac model and Hookmark version in your reply.

Thank you

No crash report from Hookmark.

Hookmark v6.9, macOS Sequoia 15.5 (24F74)

Thank you, @alexcr87 .

Could you please try starting Hookmark a couple of times now? I will check the crash report server.

Just to confirm, Hookmark 6.9 worked before you upgraded to macOS 15.5?

You mentioned it happened every time you did the upgrade. Do you remember how did you resolve this issue?

Thank you and sorry about this inconvenience.

Just did that 5 times.

Yes!

I had removed Hookmark.app and all related files/folders (AppCleaner does this whenever I remove an .app file). Then I reinstalled, and Hookmark opened just fine. I’ve tried that right after posting here but for some reason that doesn’t seem to work this time.

Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience, @alexcr87 .

Just to confirm, did you lose data after cleanup?

Sorry I can’t find crash reports from macOS 15.5 this morning, either. That’s strange.

Could you please
(1) open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, copy and paste the following command in Terminal, hit enter:
defaults write com.cogsciapps.hook output.log.to.file 1

(2) Then try starting Hookmark.
(3) In Finder, go to the menu bar and choose ‘Go’ > ‘Go to Folder…’, then enter ~/Library/Logs/com.cogsciapps.hook in the text field and press Enter.
(4)You will find a file name like “Hookmark_2025-05-23.log”
(5)Remove private info in the file and send the file to support@cogsciapps.com, zip it if it is large please.
(6)Run the following command in Terminal to turn off logging:
defaults write com.cogsciapps.hook output.log.to.file 0

Thank you

Well today Hookmark decided it was able to start. I’m seeing the Welcome pane. I haven’t changed anything at all since yesterday. I haven’t restarted my macbook either, absolutely nothing. Go figure.

That’s probably the last time I’m going through this though. I’ve lost enough time repeatedly trying to debug this. But thanks for following up.

Thank you, @alexcr87 . I am glad it works.

We haven’t encountered this issue before. Typically, if Hookmark fails to start, a crash report is generated. In this case, it appears to be a permissions issue—Hookmark may not be allowed to run on your Mac after the upgrade temporally. We will keep an eye on this.

Hm, this is really strange. Haven’t had this problem either with any of the 526 other installed apps on my system

Unfortunately, I’m having the same experience. I’ve emailed the crash report to support per the first response above. Keeping my fingers crossed!
