I have enabled a new service feature to automatically add a bookmark to DevonThink whenever Hookmark adds its own bookmark for the page. I can see the Hookmark and the Hookmark itself. However, this bookmark doesn’t show up in DevonThink. What could go wrong?
I’m in the same boat, I’m afraid: the instructions aren’t enough for me to understand what I’m supposed to do, and where I’m supposed to see any results.
It would be really helpful to have a detailed worked example of what we’re supposed to get out of this service and how we do it.
Let’s use fileA – a file in the Finder that is not in DEVONthink – and fileB – a file that is imported into DEVONthink.
Please talk me through the whole process: what actions will you take starting from scratch, and what will you expect to see afterwards, in which program(s)?
(Please assume I know nothing at all, so give me every step.)
Many thanks!
However, this bookmark doesn’t show up in DevonThink.
What did you have selected in DEVONthink at the time Hookmark added its bookmark to itself? If DEVONthink’s inbox is selected, the bookmark will go there. If some other DEVONthink folder or DB is selected, the bookmark will go there. Please try searching for the bookmark to see if you can find it.
Thanks for writing in. I’ve updated the release notes to be more precise:
- NEW: Added a new Hookmark Services setting to automatically create a new bookmark in DEVONthink for any new web bookmark added to Hookmark.
emphasis on any new web bookmark. To make this similar to the other services, non-http(s) bookmarks are not added to DEVONthink. I.e., Hookmark does not create bookmarks in DEVONthink for non-http(s) links.
The idea behind this feature (which also applies to integration Pinboard, GoodLinks etc.) is to have bookmarks for any web bookmark created by Hookmark. This is to give you the choice, when you are searching for a web page that you’ve visited, between searching in Hookmark and searching in your other bookmarking service. If you spend a lot of time in DEVONthink, GoodLinks or Pinboard, then you get the best of both worlds ( Hookmark and the other bookmarking services). This is in accordance with the Hookmark philosophy of being complementary to apps with which it integrates.
Example.
State/Behavior:
- In DEVONthink, inbox is selected.
- In Safari, visit Scientists reverse Alzheimer’s in mice and restore memory | ScienceDaily.
- Using Hookmark
Copy Link(orAdd Bookmark Without CopyingorHook to Copied Link).
Result: a new bookmark in both Hookmark and the selected DEVONthink location are created. This bookmark is tagged with `from:Hookmark`.
An example benefit of this is to support weekly review of one’s web reading using a DEVONthink search including tag: `from:Hookmark`.
This is an optional feature. Users can easily enable/disable this setting in Hookmark.
I think a useful enhancement to the current integration with DEVONthink Settings > Services > DEVONthink tab would be to enable DEVONthink users to select the location where they want the bookmark to appear, right ?
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the additional explanation. I was not clear that it was only for a web bookmark. Yes, I think being able select the location to store this in DevonThink would be very helpful, as it will allow one to use Smart Rules to automatically process the new bookmark if one’s workflow requires that. For example, I would like to include the creation date as part of the link name.
Likewise, it was not clear to me that this applies only to web bookmarks. As an enhancement, I would appreciate if it would also apply to bookmarks for local files, which is the case I use more often than web bookmarks.
Agreed. Although I usually have everything in my DEVONthink Inbox and can always start processing bookmarks from there.
That’s perfect – thank you for the detailed explanation!
And thank you for responding so quickly – I really didn’t expect an answer over the holiday period. I’m very grateful.
Yes, having some control over the location would be great – is there a way you could respect the existing DEVONthink setting?
I hope you and yours have a good rest…
that makes sense, we’ll try.
And merry Christmas to you and yours too!
I still can’t get this to work, I’m afraid, but rather than clog up the forum, I’ve sent a direct message to support together with logs and screencasts/shots. I’ll update the thread later on if there’s anything useful to report…
Thanks!
Just in case anybody else is having the same problem… @bchend from support kindly gave me the solution. It was user error, as I half suspected…
As well as following the instructions in the release notes, you have to add DEVONthink as a service and enable it in the Services panel:
I’d never used the tags or services features before and didn’t realise this needed to be done… Once I had, the bookmarks are created properly in DEVONthink as expected.
Thanks…
