When I create a Hookmark link for a file, and later create or use a symbolic link to that file, are they treated as the same underlying item?
In other words, does Hookmark resolve symlinks to the original file’s identity (inode/bookmark), or does it treat each symlink path as a separate file?
I’m trying to understand whether hooks created for the original file also show up when working with its symlinks and vice versa.
Sometimes I use symbolic links to create different collections/folders of files (pdfs etc) which I can browse simply with eg Finder. If Hookmark has the ability to detect and resolve symbolic links to the files their pointing at, that’ll make these collections much more versatile to work with.
First ensure that Settings > General is set to `Reveal hook://file link targets in Finder (rather than opening them)`.
select a symlink in Finder that points to a different directory far away.
invoke Hookmark and choose Make Hookmark File
Put that file somewhere
open the file.
result:
it will select the symlink, not the different directory.
However, if you have `Reveal hook://file link targets in Finder (rather than opening them)` unchecked (false), then it will open the symlink item (the symlink will do its thing).
If Hookmark has the ability to detect and resolve symbolic links to the files their pointing at, that’ll make these collections much more versatile to work with.
Answer is yes, except for the caveat above ( Reveal File in Finder enabled)
