# Why on Earth Do Knowledge Workers Need Hookmark?

Hookmark can be hard to understand at first because it solves a type of problem that no other software previously addressed. In my [_Cognitive Productivity: Using Knowledge to Become Profoundly Effective_](https://leanpub.com/cognitiveproductivity/) book, I called this the meta-access problem problem. It addresses a new type of information retrieval need.

1. Traditional _ **information retrieval** _ asks: “Where is this document?”

_2. **Semantic retrieval** _ asks: “What documents discuss this topic?”.

1. I believe we increasingly need _ **contextual information retrieval** _: “Given what I’m working on right now, what else belongs with it?”

Yesterday and today I published too articles about this. One on Substack:
