# Bibliome: something that would be very useful to support

[Bibliome](https://psychosonicconsulting.com/bibliome) is a very interesting new dekstop RAG that runs entirely locally. It’s great at surfacing items (particularly, PDFs) that have sunk in a dense library. It’s early days, and not quite as open as Bookends/DEVONthink - though it shares some of their functionality - a Hookmark integration would go a great distance to integrating it properly into those tools and addressing functionality it doesn’t focus on.
I suspect there’s no AppleScript dictionary for it yet, but it would be grest to add to the list of things that should be touched by Hookmark in future. I’ve sent requests to the developers, but I’m not sure what their roadmap for the application is yet. If, by any chance, there was enough to start an integration, could I urge for it to be added (ideally, before my thesis deadline!)

thank you, as a professor I concur this looks very interesting! I will buy a copy for myself.
I’d love for it to have an API for Hookmark to get recommendations from it and show it in the RELATED section of the context window. We’ll have a look and will ask the developers per:

I had another look at this and wondered whether it can complement (but not replace of course) Bookends which I use for my academic PDFs. I also have a folder of various PDFs from the web that it could search. Not sure it can handle 2 top level folders. will check. There doesn’t seem to be a free download.
I like this:

their business model is a bit concerning since it’s a one-time fee for a lifetime license – hard to see how that can be sustainable.

Hi, I’m the developer of Bibliome. thanks @davem for asking, and @bchend for picking it up.
Hookmark support is built. Bibliome now has an AppleScript dictionary, and `current link` returns a Markdown link to the document and page open in the reader. with nothing open it returns an error, as your developer page asks.
it isn’t in the App Store yet. 1.6 is in review with Apple right now, and Hookmark support is in the update after that. i’ve asked about a Hookmark license so i can test the two together before it ships, and i’ll post here when it’s out.
On features, the “Related” idea is interesting. this first version only does linking, but if Hookmark has a way to ask an app for related items, i’d like to hear what it would need from Bibliome.

quick update: i have Hookmark running against a local build now (thanks for the licence). Copy Link gives back `mypdflibrarian://open-pdf?file=…&page=12`, and following it brings Bibliome to that page in the window that’s already open. so the linking half is done and just waits on the App Store.
on Related, let me answer my own question with what i can offer, and you can tell me what to change.
Bibliome already computes this internally. every document is chunked and embedded on device, and meaning search runs over that index, so “what else in this library is about this document” is the same query with the open document’s own text as the input. all local; the app has no network entitlement at all.
the shape i’d add is one more scripting command:
```auto
related documents for POSIX file "/path/to/file.pdf" limit 5
```
returning a list of records, each with title, file, page, link (a `mypdflibrarian://` link you can open) and a relevance score. Hookmark shows what it likes and drops the rest.
what i need from you:
1. does the Related section have a way to call an app, and what does it expect back? i can return records, a list of markdown links, or JSON, whichever you already parse.
2. how often would it call? a search without reranking is roughly 0.2 to 1 second on my library of about 900k passages, so once per active document is comfortable; once per keystroke would not be.
3. minimum useful fields: title and link. i can add the page and a short matching excerpt if the context window has room.
if a local socket suits you better than AppleScript, the same engine already answers over a unix socket for Bibliome’s own helper, so that’s a small addition too.

Bibliome 1.6 is out on the Mac App Store now, with the AppleScript dictionary, so Hookmark can link to whatever the reader is showing.
until it’s in the integration scripts bundle, you can add it yourself. in Hookmark, Settings \> Scripts, click + under the app list, pick Bibliome, and make the whole Get Address script this one line:
tell application id “com.langberg.mypdflibrarian” to get current link
replace everything in that box with the line above. pasted into another app’s template it won’t work, and Hookmark says “No linkable item found in Bibliome”.
Copy Link gives you a link to the document and page, and following it opens Bibliome back on that page.
two things i ran into:
- if Bibliome updates while Hookmark is running, Hookmark can keep looking at the old copy and fail with “A identifier can’t go after this identifier”. quitting Hookmark from the menu bar and opening it again fixes it. closing the window isn’t enough.
- the link carries the file’s path, so it breaks if the PDF is moved outside Bibliome.
@LucB the Related idea from earlier still stands. i’d still like to know what that section can call and which fields it wants before i build it.
